Bridging the Gap Between Drivers and Technicians

In many fleets, an invisible wall between drivers and technicians fosters tension because they don’t understand each other’s importance. Drivers want to get back on the road quickly; technicians want to fix things right the first time. When communication breaks down, minor issues get missed, and repairs are delayed, which can increase the chance of driver safety incidents. Bridging this gap is one of the fastest ways to improve uptime, safety, and morale.

It starts with redefining how these two roles view each other. Drivers are not just “operators,” and technicians are not just “mechanics.” Both are responsible for keeping the fleet running efficiently and safely. A culture shift promoting teamwork and respecting each other’s position is the groundwork for a successful program.

Create a Standardized Reporting System: Many problems stem from inconsistent or vague driver reports. “It’s making a weird noise” doesn’t help a technician much. Use a digital DVIR system or app that prompts drivers to categorize and describe issues in clear terms. Include fields for sounds, smells, and specific driving conditions. This helps technicians diagnose faster and reduce time spent chasing symptoms.

Encourage Face-to-Face Interactions: Whenever possible, allow drivers to speak directly with the technician handling their repair. A two-minute conversation often eliminates 20 minutes of guesswork. Build this into your process, whether through a service window, scheduled repair intake times, or video calls for mobile or remote fleets.

Feedback Loops Matter: Don’t leave the driver in the dark once a repair is complete. Technicians should document what was fixed and why it mattered. This creates a learning opportunity for the driver and promotes accountability across the team. A brief daily or weekly recap shared with both groups can reinforce a team mindset.

Recognize and Reward Collaboration: Finally, celebrate when drivers and technicians work well together. It could be a quick shoutout in a team meeting or a small bonus tied to uptime goals. Reinforcing the right behavior builds momentum.

Bridging the gap isn’t just about fixing vehicles faster; it’s about creating a unified team that respects each other’s roles. When drivers and technicians communicate clearly and trust each other, your fleet will experience less downtime, fewer breakdowns, and more profits, as your fleet will be on the road more often.

Fire Department Receives JETT Grant

JASPER ^® Endows Today and Tomorrow (JETT) presented a grant to the Loogootee (Indiana) Volunteer Fire Department April 14th.

Department representatives Michael Stewart and Fire Chief Eric Thomas (at left) , were joined by JETT members Kelli Lampert, Sarah Blackgrave (center) and Eric Brittain (right) , who is also a member of the fire department.

This grant will be used to purchase a battery-operated fan that allows firefighters to perform their duties more safely and efficiently during fire incidents. The fan helps with proper ventilation to disperse smoke, toxins, and heat, which can significantly impact firefighter visibility and respiratory health.

JETT is a giving circle for Associate-Owners of Jasper Holdings, Inc. and their families. They focus on pooling resources and creating a more significant combined impact on our communities. JETT aims to learn more about philanthropic opportunities and support those organizations that promote intelligent giving.

Jasper Holdings, Inc. Announces Record ESOP Value for 2024

On April 29th, Associate-Owner Shareholders of Jasper Holdings, Inc. (JHI) Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) received some outstanding news. JHI Chairman/CEO Doug Bawel announced, “A new all-time record price of $1,295.15 per share based on their performance and market conditions, up $171.25 per share. This past year, we had an annual contribution of 15%, with the average contribution across JHI being 18% (including trust fund gain shares).” Bawel shared, “Our ESOP has been a game changer for our Associate-Owners, their Families, and the Communities where they live. Our ESOP is truly about Wealth Building for our Associate-Owners.”

Bawel added, “Today, we have a total of 3,419 active Associate-Shareholders and have distributed over $733 Million of stock since the inception of our ESOP. 1,813, or 53% of our Associate-Owners, have greater than $50,000 in stock, and 1,331, or 39% of our Associate-Owners have greater than $100,000 in stock. Albuquerque Branch Opens for Jasper Holdings, Inc. Brands

Jasper Engines & Transmissions has opened a branch location in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that shares its space with Weller Truck Parts.

The new branch is located at 541 Airport Drive NW Suite A in the Los Volcanes neighborhood, approximately five miles west of the Albuquerque city center.

“The new Jasper Holdings, Inc. location has over 12,600 square feet of space,” said JASPER Director of Branch Operations Kevin Powell. “I am very excited to share this facility with our Weller Truck Parts group and our setup team has been hard at work getting ready for operations.”

“Previously, we offered limited service to this market on overnight runs out of Lubbock, Texas, and with freight carriers,” said Powell. “Our primary focus is to provide world- class products and services to our customers. As we onboard the rest of our team, we will continue to expand delivery to this market, increasing availability and shortening delivery lead times.”

Albuquerque is the 13th shared JASPER/Weller branch location and the 52nd branch location and distribution center for JASPER in 30 states.

JET Transit Leadership Changes

Jasper Engines & Transmissions announced several leadership changes within our JET Transit Fleet and Service groups which took effect March 24th.

Matt Boehm (left image) has been named National Fleet Manager. Matt began his career with JASPER® in 2002 as a Customer Service Technician. He subsequently spent time in the Jasper Production System (JPS), Transmission Production, Fleet Maintenance, and most recently as JET Transit Service Manager.

Matt succeeds Terry Ebert who had been JET Transit’s National Fleet Manager since 1988 and officially retired after 38+ years of service. Terry started with JASPER in 1986 and has spent his entire career in various positions within JET Transit.

Chad Bland (right image) has accepted the position of JET Transit Service Manager over our Fleet Service garages in the Crawford County and Jasper HQ locations. Chad has been with JASPER since 2010. He has served in various roles throughout his career, including Inside Sales, Branch Operations, JET Transit, and is currently our Service Administrator in Fleet Service.

JASPER congratulates Matt and Chad on their new roles within the company and a special thanks to Terry for his dedication and loyalty, along with well wishes for his much-deserved retirement.
